Today is the 100th birthday of Alan Turing, who is the father of Computing.
First thing, if you’re using a phone today, or a computer, or ATM, it is because of his brain. He has dawned a new era in computer science as we know it today, all the ‘modern machines’ capable of executing a sequence of micro level tasks are advancement of his Turing Machine. One of the most important men to grace the field of mathematics. Damn Turing rocks!
I came across this google doodle celebrating the great’s birthday and was taken back to last year, my final year course of Theory of Computation. Being a backbencher, it was always a hard task to get me interested to read a textbook but Alan Turing was truly something. I read.
I find he looked for life, he was very interested in understanding Fibonacci Numbers and their existence in plant structures. He is a theorist, not only bound by computing but also nature, biology etc. Read his legendary paper – The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis.
Turing was an atheist and gay. I mention this because of an important factor we need to understand, if you are a person who differentiates between us, if you hate gays and atheists, which stupid people do, take note – Turing. His personal life does not matter to us then again, it teaches us something he is not really known for. He is a major influence towards our information age and it teaches us our heart must be unbiased to live and care for each other.
Happy birthday to Alan Turing!
