We see uncountable number of beggars roaming on the streets of Dhaka everyday, and we also see a large number of day laborers working on construction sites. However, a beggar`s daily income is far more than that of a laborer`s.So,why beggars beg and why the day laborers do not beg? Let`s not count the disabled and old, but isn’t it the ethical difference, the sense of self-denial that separates them in taking up different professions? It is easier for you to knock on several doors and demand alms than to carry a 70 kilograms of cement to fund your next meal, the question is what would you do?
I`m not trying to make you stand on their shoes, but the fact is the existing large community of day laborers is as important as the engineers who work behind the skyscrapers you admire on your way home. What we see around are build on their hands and sweat,so they deserve an equal respect. They could just beg instead!
